This Aberford bay is a textbook example of when cafe-style shutters are the right call. The room already had a calm, contemporary feel — warm taupe walls, light oak-style flooring, and a simple chest of drawers — but the bay throws a lot of glass toward neighbouring roofs and the street below. Full-height shutters would have worked, yet the homeowners wanted maximum daylight from eye level upward whilst still being able to screen the lower sash area for privacy. We designed and fitted made-to-measure cafe-style plantation shutters across all three facets of the bay, with paired panels per section so the louvres can be adjusted independently and the leaves fold back neatly when you want the opening completely clear. The result reads as intentional joinery: white on white with the frames, crisp lines, and a room that feels brighter than before because the upper glass is never dressed out.

Before — the new bay glazing in place, sills levelled and checked. A good moment to confirm recess sizes and how cafe-height shutters will sit relative to the sash splits. -
After — cafe-style shutters across the bay: louvred privacy where you need it, open glass above for light and a view of the sky and neighbouring roofs.
Why cafe-style works so well on a street-facing bay
Bays are brilliant for pulling daylight deep into a room, but they can also feel exposed once you are seated or working at desk height. Cafe-style shutters cover the lower portion of the opening only, so you gain louvred screening for pavements, drives, and overlooking angles without sacrificing the sense of height that comes from clear glass above.
They also sit beautifully alongside traditional sash proportions — here the shutter height aligns with the lower sashes, so the look feels native to the architecture rather than bolted on.
Made to measure for each facet
Even a straightforward three-sided bay needs accurate widths, consistent mid-height lines across the angles, and hinge positions that clear handles and opening lights. We template on site, agree louvre size and panel splits with you, then fit so every leaf opens smoothly and the frames sit square to the architrave. That attention to detail is what keeps cafe shutters looking sharp for years, not just on day one.
